In Memoriam Sebastian G. CiancioIn ,M eDmoDriamS , MS (1937-2020)
Periodontology lost another giant in our field this past October when Sebastian Ciancio passed away. Seb was a true leader in our field and his impact on the profession was immeasurable. He was recognized worldwide for his expertise in research and clinical applications of Periodontology and Pharmacology. Most importantly, he was a teacher and scholar and he had an enormous impact on the career paths of many future scientists and periodontists, including me. I think I speak for every one of us when I say that we are deeply indebted to Seb for his caring and support that went well beyond...

Aims: To test that the osteogenic capacity of periodontal ligament (PDL) fibroblasts can be mediated by TLR2 and TLR4 activation. Materials and Methods: Human PDL fibroblasts were cultured in osteogenic medium and treated with TLR2 and TLR4 agonists (Pam3CSK4 and monophosphoryl Lipid A (MPLA), respectively). Cell proliferation was measured by MTT and BrdU incorporation. Osteogenic differentiation was measured by alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity. Nodule formation was measured for...
Aims: This study aimed to determine the possible clinical and histological periodontal effects of long-term coca leaf chewing habit in habitants of the highland region of Peru. Materials and Methods: A total of 100 residents, were recruited for the study. Fifty individuals were habitual coca leaf chewers and 50 were non-users. Eligibility criteria were: 60-80 years old, ≥20 teeth present (excluding third molars), systemically healthy (controlled systemic disease), not using medication...
Background: The present review aimed to assess the impact of being a complier to supportive periodontal therapy (SPT), when compared to not being a complier, on tooth loss in patients with periodontitis. Materials and Methods: Prospective and retrospective observational studies were included. MEDLINE, EMBASE, and LILACS databases were searched up to May 2019. The odds-ratio (OR) and standard error (SE) values of the studied groups (compliant or non-compliant) were converted to logOR, and the...
Aims: To determine the differences in the long-term clinical outcomes between Regeneration (REG) and Conservative Surgery (CS) in infra-bony defects. Materials and Methods: Three databases were searched [PubMed, Medline and Embase] up to April 2019. Following screening, 17 studies were included. Randomized Controlled Clinical Trials, Controlled Clinical Trials and retrospective studies with long-term clinical observations (≥ 24-months) were selected. After subgrouping the studies regarding...
Aims: To estimate the change in the alveolar ridge by means of a new alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) approach, using an anodized titanium foil (Tseal) associated with a bovine bone graft (BBG) by cone-beam computerized tomography. Materials and Methods: Sixteen patients, each presenting one hopeless tooth, were selected and these teeth were carefully extracted. The alveolar socket was filled with BBG and the Tseal was trimmed and adapted to the bone crest. The primary outcome variable was...
Background: The aim of this study was to assess the stress concentration in simulated periodontal alveolar bone containing healthy teeth with and without attachment loss. Methods: Six 3-D models of a lower central incisor were created simulating the teeth structure, cancellous and cortical bone and periodontal ligament. Each model presented a 1mm increasing distance between cement-enamel junction (CEJ) and alveolar bone crest (ABC) (1 to 6mm). A 100N, 45-degree load was applied to the buccal...
This article describes the removal of a malpositioned dental implant, using an implant retriever, followed by guided tissue regeneration with the use of an xenogeneic graft and a dense polytetrafluorethylene membrane that remained partially exposed for 28 days, and the post-surgical prosthetic and orthodontic treatment until conclusion of the oral rehabilitation procedure. The patient, 50 years of age, presented to a private clinic for evaluation of an implant supported fixed crown, with...
Objectives: To compare the outcomes of root coverage when the (1) donor site of connective tissue graft is the palate or tuberosity and (2) when connective tissue graft is harvested with intra- or extra-oral de-epithelization techniques. Methods: The primary outcome was patient satisfaction. Secondary outcomes included complete root coverage, percentage of root coverage and keratinized tissue width. Searches were conducted until December 2019 in PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus and CENTRAL. Results:...
